The BCN eMotorsport team overcomes the 22 kilometer test with an electric battery, for the first time on the Austrian circuit

Jul 29, 2025

BCN eMotorsport has managed, for the first time, to complete the Formula Student 'Endurance' endurance test at the Red Bull Ring circuit (Austria), where it competed with the CAT17X vehicle from July 20 to 24: 22 km of route with electric battery. It has also obtained very good results in other tests at the Austrian circuit and is now preparing to continue participating in the competition at the Barcelona-Catalunya (Montmeló) circuits, from August 5 to 10, and at the Hockenheim Ring in Germany, from August 18 to 24.

The new CAT17X of the BCN eMotorsport team of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), formed by students from the Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering (ETSEIB) and the Barcelona School of Telecommunications Engineering (ETSETB), debuts a more compact and lightweight monocoque geometry, with a new modular manufacturing method. The battery has also been redesigned, which has greater regeneration capacity and operates based on new power and traction control algorithms. The vehicle now incorporates an adjustable suspension to work independently of the forces received, an aerodynamic kit that extends autonomy, an internal converter to optimize regenerative braking, intelligent software that distributes power and prevents skidding, and an optimized LiDAR sensor to improve vision and cone detection.

In this edition, the BCN eMotorsport team has the support of Fractus, which has also collaborated by advising the team and providing material to improve the telemetry system. The objectives have focused on achieving high reliability with the minimum possible delay and implementing 5G connectivity in the system.

The team has managed, for the first time, to complete the Endurance test at the Red Bull Ring circuit (Austria), where it competed from July 20 to 24. The test consists of completing 22 km in the shortest possible time, but the electrical consumption during the journey is decisive for other scores. The CAT17X has completed the entire route successfully and with sufficient battery. It has also obtained very good scores in other tests carried out at the Austrian circuit. Now, the team is preparing to continue participating in the Formula Student competition at the Circuits of Barcelona-Catalunya (Montmeló), from August 5 to 10, and at the Hockenheim Ring in Germany, from August 18 to 24.
