'From Lab to Market': the intersection between university innovation and the health sector
Jul 16, 2025
The 'From Lab to Market' program, a joint initiative of Fractus and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) promoted by the Fractus-UPC Deep Tech Hub, is consolidating itself as a driver of technology transfer. This is highlighted by the article published in the digital newspaper 'Gaceta de Salud' dedicated to this initiative, which has as its main objective to shorten the gap between university research and market needs, with a particular focus on the health sector, and which is already bearing fruit.
From Lab to Market seeks to link academic research with market needs, especially in the health sector. The article published in Gaceta de Salud highlights that this initiative, which has been in operation for more than a year, focuses on identifying and transferring advanced technologies with significant potential for social and economic value. Carmen Borja, CTO of Fractus, emphasizes in the article the importance of this program as a strategy for the transfer of innovative technology from the UPC.
The program has promoted health innovations from UPC groups, such as CARDIAC and MyGAIT. CARDIAC focuses on low-cost home medical devices to measure cardiovascular parameters, while MyGAIT is an intelligent template for the clinical monitoring of patients with Parkinson's disease. Óscar Casas, a researcher linked to both technologies, explains that CARDIAC simplifies the use of medical devices and increases the frequency of measurements, which could improve diagnoses. As for MyGAIT, it is a technology developed in collaboration with the University of Zaragoza, it provides objective data on the patient's evolution through the measurement of gait and heart rate variability, thus facilitating personalized treatments.
The program's success in developing low-cost electronic designs for these measurements is projected to reduce healthcare costs and promote preventive medicine. In addition, the same research group is beginning to work on aspects that could result in monitoring chronic respiratory diseases or the degree of dysphagia in people with cerebral palsy.
